The American justice system works pretty well and most of the time delivers punishments that fit the crime. Occasionally, however, a person is put into prison even when he or she was innocent. Here are some who spent time in a cell before having their name cleared and being released.
This man was put onto death row for the rape and murder of a nine-year old girl. Eventually fingerprinting cleared him of the crime.
False testimony landed Gray in prison for rape and murder. She was later cleared of charges using DNA testing.

After spending 10 years in prison, Smith was later cleared of the rape he was accused of using DNA testing.
After sitting in a cell for 14 years for a rape he didn’t commit, Cage was released and compensated for the ordeal.
Charles Irvin Fain
After 18 years in prison for kidnapping, rape and murder, Fain was cleared with DNA evidence.
This man spent 11 years in prison for a murder he didn’t commit. Once cleared, his story became the subject of a John Grisham novel.
Ada Joann Taylor
Taylor spent 19 years in prison for the murder of an elderly man, though DNA later cleared her of the crime.
Dedge served 22 years for a rape he didn’t commit and is now spending his time trying to help other wrongly accused prisoners compensation for their time in jail.
To avoid a life sentence, Bostic actually pled guitly to rape, though he was later exonerated. He spent 18 years in jail.
Despite spending 19 years in jail for a rape he didn’t commit, Maher remains positive and optimistic about the rest of his life.
